Swedish discoverer Torbjørn Ludvigsen has spent the last 3 years developing a brand new quite large-format 3D printer that may build furniture-sized objects in any area — amazingly simply and comparatively cheaply. Ludvigsen’s invention, the Hangprinter, employs a system of wires and computer-controlled pulleys anchored to the walls, floor, and ceiling. Once installed, the Hangprinter primarily uses the area itself as a casing.

This project is part of a bigger initiative within the maker community called RepRap, that stands for Replicating fast Prototyper. The concept is to distribute 3D-printing technology to low- and medium-income communities by means of open-source style and self-replicating machines.
The Hangprinter is not the first large-format, caseless 3D-printing system, however it’s unique in many ways. For one issue, it’s cheap. “This may be a flexible manufacturing technique, therefore it’ll be helpful in a lot of different things that I cannot foresee,” he said. “Some of them might be terribly important/cool/useful. i would not need to stand in the way of vital, cool, and helpful things happening.”
