You may be looking up about what it is so that you can relate to other people and not be out of the loop. What is TikTok?

Like many others, it is a video-based mobile application where users post their content. Although unlike Youtube or any other social media platforms, TikTok’s main feature is that they allow their users to sync music to short videos they make, and the longest run time for a video is 60 seconds.

It is owned by the company ByteDance, which is a company based in Beijing. Zhang Yiming founded it during 2012, but it was not released until 2017 for both IOS and Android outside China. Although before Tik Tok, they released Douyin back in 2016, which is similar to TikTok but are based on different servers to follow Chinese censorship laws.

In the beginning, it wasn’t globally viral, but now, TikTok has hit over one billion downloads worldwide and has been the center of attention of the youth and even some celebrities. TikTok has also been a topic of conversation on television programs and news outlets.

How did it gain popularity?

TikTok shares a lot of similarities with the famous app Vine, which was a smash hit among the youth before it got shot down on January 17, 2017. The appeal of Vine was that you could make entertaining content with nothing but a phone camera, some features it gave you to edit, and a good concept to grab people’s attention.

Each video on Vine could only go up to six seconds, but that was what made it great. It allowed people to challenge their creativity, and with such a short time, it made it so much easier for people to invest their time in watching a vine.

Also, you may see that TikTok shares similarities to another popular app musical.ly. That is because, in November 2017, TikTok bought Musical.ly and merged, which would explain why those that had Musical.ly were a bit confused when their favorite app had a new name and logo.

Which also helped TikTok’s rise in popularity. With a lot of people who were fans or users of Musical.ly migrating over to Tik Tok. Since it was almost identical, there was not much for the youth to consider to make the shift.

Especially that now more people are getting into TikTok to participate in the latest trends. Such as dance challenges or lip-syncing to hilarious audio. There is a place for everyone in TikTok, which elevates its appeal. IT also helps TikTok that famous celebrities and internet personalities are taking part in the app as well.

Perhaps give it a try for yourself

They say, “don’t knock it till you try it,” and I believe that applies to mobile apps too. If you are looking for something new and fun to do by yourself or with your friends, then perhaps Tik Tok may be the one app you are looking for. Tik Tok is a vast and diverse platform with content creators of every shape and size.

Whether it be dancing, funny videos, or just random content, you are free to explore what you wish to upload on the app. During that time, you may be able to build an audience and have a little community of your own, unlike ever before. If you are successful, you may get an opportunity with a brand and makes some money on your own!

Takeaway

Famous YouTubers such as David Dobrik, Liza Koshy, and many more own their TikTok accounts and post content for their fans. It also helps to know that it is the right place for businesses too since writing advertisements on billboards won’t get as much reach to the new digital age. So reaching out to TikTokers to advertise for them would be more effective.

In short, TikTok is on the rise, and from the looks of things is going to keep on rising with the overwhelming support from its users. So if you are still a bit unsure as to what TikTok is or the appeal, it would be in your best interest to download the app yourself and give it a try.
