9 Types of Restorative Dentistry and When You Need Them

As we grow older, we raise various concerns regarding our teeth. Decayed, crooked, damaged, as well as a discolored tooth that affects our confidence. Well, thinking about restoring your teeth requires proper planning and decision. A time comes when you consider choosing rightful cosmetic dentistry procedures to address your concern.

To find the right restorative procedure appropriate to your condition, you must seek help from a dentist. It will help you choose restorative dentistry beforehand.

Common Restorative Dentistry Options

Dentures

One of the most common restorative options for your dental issues, especially for the older ones who have lost the strength of their teeth. It serves as a replacement for your missing tooth. Dentures seem like real ones, making your teeth complete. This could also be an option for the surrounding tissue to make your smile perfect.

Thus, there are four main types of denture implants available, they are:

Fixed Bridge, Partial Denture, Complete and Dental Implants. It is a must that you consult your dentist to make sure that you will receive the right treatment or procedure concerning your dental issue.

Root canal

If you want to restore your tooth without removing it, then this one might be an option you could consider. A root canal is a process of removing the inner parts of your tooth, such as the pulp where nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels lie.

After removing, it is then filled up with sealants. Afterward, a crown is added, making it look like a normal one. Thus, this procedure can only be an option when the pulp within the tooth is already dead. By then, the restoration of the tooth may take place.

Extraction

This option is the permanent removal of the tooth. It is the best option if the tooth has no chance to be saved and is affecting the patient by any means. Thus, at a younger age, it is not a problem as teeth continue to grow in this stage. In reverse, adults have a lower chance of growing back their tooth once it is pulled out. This is where dentures are then applied.

Implant

Unlike root canal, this procedure is done by replacing the root portion of the lost tooth with metal and screw-like posts. It is attached to an artificial tooth and then implanted on the jawbones to make it hold stronger.

Thus, unlike other procedures, this option takes time to heal. It needs to be perfectly attached to your jawbone to avoid any harmful effects on it. This may take a couple of months or even a year to perfectly heal.

Veneers

One dental restorative option considered by many today is veneers. it does not involve operations and this option takes a couple of minutes to achieve. Veneers are thin coverings placed on the external part of the tooth. It is an instant-result-based procedure to hide imperfections and make your teeth look perfect.

Bridges

Gaps in your teeth could be treated with this option. This is a false tooth that is attached to the abutment teeth reaching the other side of the gap.  The false tooth is made of porcelain to match the actual look of your tooth. Aside from that, this is often made of gold materials for teeth fashion.

There are four types available today. They are Traditional, Cantilever, Maryland, and Implant-Supported. Well again, you must consult with your dentist to better choose the right options for your dental issue.

Crowns

This is covering a tooth with enamel. Thus, unlike Veneers, this is a cap that covers a damaged tooth. It is first reshaped to fit the crowns to be put. This is an option that could be chosen by individuals who have worn-out teeth or weakened ones. Thus, there are two types of crowns available, permanent and temporary. Basically, these two come together as you can apply for a temporary crown while waiting for your permanent crown to be made.

Inlays and Onlays

This is a form of indirect restoration of the tooth. It is a single yet solid piece that perfectly fits the size and shape of the damaged tooth. It is then placed and cemented to cover the cavity, making it look perfect and undamaged. Thus, it is only done on a tooth that is minimally damaged. Whereas a fully damaged tooth needs a crown restorative procedure.

An inlay is a process done to cover pits and fissures of a tooth, while an onlay covers over one part of the tooth or is much wider. Thus, covering the entire tooth will be then called a crown.

Dental Bonding

This is mainly a process done to cover cracked, discolored, and chipped teeth. The teeth-colored composite is then applied, making it look perfect and pearl-like white. Dental Bonding is way painless compared to other dental procedures available, which is also perfect for those who don’t want to undergo operations for tooth restoration.

Aside from that, this restorative procedure is cheaper compared to crowns and veneers, thus still effective to cover up your teeth flaws.

Bottom line

These are the options you could choose to address the dental issue you have. Thus, it is important to consult your dentist first to have it checked and provide the solution.

Well, as a friendly reminder, you must take care of your teeth starting today, so that you will not have a hard time fixing them in the future.
